Capitalism and Individualism

Tibor R. Machan

Most defenses of a free-market society use arguments derived from economics, and too such arguments assume a morally repugnant concept of individualism. Tibor Machan recasts the defense of capitalism from an economic to a moral ground, stressing that free markets provide an infrastructure for human moral decision-making. He thus avoids the amoral selfishness of homo economicus while confronting the collectivist subjugation of the individual found in Marxism. Capitalism and Individualism is a spirited, passionate, yet clearly argued moral vindication of the free-market society, a social system that continues to be a subject of much skepticism.
